![]() Moving around the back, Ford follows the Picasso maxim that “good artists borrow, great artists steal.” In this case, they have lifted directly from General Motors with an integrated side step ahead of the rear wheels to ease access to items in the bed and molded-in corner steps in the rear bumper. A spit screen of the new 2023 model (left) and the previous 2022 model (right) illustrates the gentle stylistic evolution. Again, the goal is to evoke strength, in this case, straps holding the whole truck together horizontally. ![]() The horizontal bars in the grille now extend out nearly to the outer edges of the front fascia, wrapping around the headlamp modules. The same theme is repeated at the rear corners. As on the F-150, an LED strip wraps around front lights in a C-shape meant to evoke a clamp and the working nature of the truck. ![]() Some themes emerged from the light-duty models, particularly around the signature “C-Clamp” lights. The change also reduces aerodynamic drag, as do wheels that now sit flush with the bodywork. The traditional Ford wheel arches remain, but the metal has now been softened, bringing them closer to the look of the F-150 Lightning. The fender vents behind the front wheels containing the model badging have been stretched vertically and are now functional as an air extractor. It still looks very much like a big Ford pickup, and that’s what customers expect, yet all the exterior sheet metal except for the roof panel is changed in a very evolutionary way. Evolutionary Exterior Designįrom a design standpoint, the new Super Duty is not a radical departure from the current models. There’s also a new 6.8-liter gasoline V8 engine based on the 7.3-liter “Godzilla” V8 architecture. It also features software and electrical advancements designed to support upfitters who use the F-Series SD chassis cab architecture as a base for bucket trucks, emergency response vehicles and utility companies. Set to go on sale in spring 2023, the 2023 Super Duty lineup isn’t exactly “new” but combines an updated design with many of the cool tech features that debuted on the F-150 over the last two years. (Abbreviated “SD,” the Super Duty moniker refers to the F-250 up to the F-650 models, basically everything above the popular F-150 half-ton pickup.) Moreover, they generate enormous profits for Ford, contributing to the $35 billion-plus investment the company is making in electric vehicles. Like the light-duty F-150, the medium-duty SD pickup range models are best sellers in their segments.
